This series was an experiment to understand how best to use mycelium to make household products and eventually furniture. I tested moulds made from metal, plastic, glass, silicon and gel-flex to see which materials preformed best with the material.
Mycelium is the vegetative body of fungi and when combined with sterilised organic matter such as wood chip, straw or hemp and placed into a mould it will grow into the desired shape. It benefits the environment as it eats bio-waste, absorbs co2, decomposes easily after-use while also enriching the soil with nutrients and uses less energy than plastic manufacturing.
